At our Newport Beach oral surgery practice, Dr. Nader Salib offers sedation dentistry and anesthesia options for oral surgery to help patients experience a more comfortable, relaxed treatment experience. Depending on your medical history, level of dental anxiety and the procedure being performed, sedation options may include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation with medication, and IV sedation.

As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with advanced anesthesia training, Dr. Salib provides sedation for procedures including wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, tooth extractions, bone grafting and full-mouth dental implant surgery. Each patient is carefully evaluated to determine the appropriate level of dental sedation or anesthesia, with an emphasis on safety, monitoring, comfort and individualized care for patients in Newport Beach and throughout Orange County, California.

Our clinical team is fully trained and certified in sedation and anesthesia monitoring, as required by California dental regulations — so every level of sedation is delivered safely.

Your Sedation Options

Nitrous oxide
Light, warm relaxation from a mask; clears in minutes and you can drive yourself home.
Oral sedation
A tablet before the appointment — deeper than nitrous; you will need a driver.
IV sedation
Given through a vein and adjusted throughout; most patients have little or no memory of the procedure.
General anesthesia
Fully asleep, for longer or more complex cases and patients who cannot be treated awake.
Sedation for children
For a child who cannot sit through treatment awake, with weight-based dosing and a full assessment first.
Continuously monitored
Blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and breathing are watched throughout.

What to Expect

01
Before — your history, medications and airway are assessed; fasting instructions are sent to follow exactly.
02
Arrive — short sleeves, flat shoes, and a driver for anything beyond nitrous.
03
During — the sedation is given and the dose adjusted throughout, with continuous monitoring.
04
You are unaware — under IV sedation, no awareness of the procedure or the time passing.
05
After — grogginess for the day, soft food, a driver home, and back to routine the next day.

What Does It Cost?

The cost of sedation for oral surgery varies according to the type of anesthesia selected — such as nitrous oxide, oral sedation or IV sedation — the length and complexity of the procedure, the patient’s medical history and the level of monitoring required. Sedation fees may also differ for wisdom teeth removal, complex tooth extractions, dental implants, bone grafting and full-mouth dental implant surgery.

During a consultation, Dr. Nader Salib, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Newport Beach, will review your health, treatment needs and dental anxiety to recommend an appropriate sedation or anesthesia option and provide a personalized cost estimate. Insurance benefits, payment options and financing may be available depending on the treatment plan and individual policy.

Recovery

Nitrous clears within minutes and you can drive yourself home. Oral, IV and general anesthesia leave grogginess for the rest of the day — a driver is required, soft food and rest, and most patients are back to work or school the next day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be asleep?
Under IV sedation you are not technically asleep, but most patients describe it that way — you are deeply relaxed, unaware of the procedure, and have little or no memory of it afterwards. If you want to be genuinely asleep, general anesthesia is available in the office.
Do I need someone to drive me home?
For anything beyond nitrous oxide, yes — oral, IV and general anesthesia all require an adult to drive you and stay with you. After nitrous you can drive yourself.
How long does it take to wear off?
Nitrous clears within minutes. Oral, IV and general anesthesia leave grogginess for the rest of the day; you should not drive until the following day.
Can my child have sedation?
Yes. Nitrous suits older children with mild nerves; IV sedation or general anesthesia is used where the procedure or the child’s age makes awake treatment unrealistic, with weight-based dosing and a full assessment first.
Is sedation safe if I have a medical condition?
Your history, medications and airway are assessed before anything is scheduled. Some conditions mean a different option or a hospital setting, and we will tell you if that applies.
Can I eat before my appointment?
Follow the fasting instructions exactly — for sedation beyond nitrous, do not eat or drink for the period we specify, or the appointment is cancelled for safety.

“I had the best experience with this office! I went in to remove all 4 of my wisdom teeth and was nervous prior to the procedure. Dr. Salib was so patient and walked me through the entire procedure. I didn’t feel a thing! It was the best experience! And the front staff was just as friendly and kind as he was. They answered all of my questions and made me feel at ease. One of the cleanest offices I’ve been to…. I even had a great view from my treatment room! Truly a wonderful and great experience. I’m so happy this is where I came to get my treatment completed. Highly recommend this office! Thank you so much Dr. Salib!”

“I HAD THE BEST EXPERIENCE HERE! I am 23 years old and was kind terrified at my age to get them out due to higher bleeding risk. Due to me being in my 20s on my own I researched several people and did a consult here. I was super impressed and decided to choose him. Yes he was pricier but to me worth every penny!! He is priced higher for a reason in my opinion. Cause his healing after surgery was so fast!! The pain was minimal. The procedure itself was so quick and well done. He sent me home with all the supplies I needed, answered any and all questions. Sent the person taking me home with any aftercare instructions. The PRP after the procedure is more of a cost and honestly I wasn’t gonna do it. But I decided okay let’s try it.. it was sooo worth it. My sister did hers without this and took her over a week to heal and was in so much pain going to another oral surgeon doctor. Whereas I went here to Dr salib and did the PRP and was okay to resume activities in less than 2 days and has minimal pain. Highly highly recommend this doctor!! Choose him to get your wisdom teeth out for sure :)) great experience”
