Dental Bone Grafting in Newport Beach

If you have been told you need a graft before an implant, the answer comes down to arithmetic: an implant needs a certain volume of bone to stay stable, and jawbone shrinks once a tooth is gone.

A bone graft places biologic or synthetic mineral into an area where jawbone is missing or thin. It is not permanent hardware — it acts as a scaffold your own body remodels into living bone over several months, at which point an implant can be anchored in it.

The jaw keeps bone only where it is used. After a tooth is removed the bone that held its root resorbs, fastest in the first six months, which is why grafting is often needed before an implant.

What Grafting Is Used For

Socket preservation
A graft placed into the socket at the time of extraction to hold the ridge shape.
Ridge augmentation
Rebuilding width or height in a site that has already collapsed.
Sinus lift
Adding bone under the maxillary sinus for upper back implants.
Periodontal defects
Filling bone craters left by gum disease around teeth worth saving.
Denture support
Improving a ridge that has flattened under a removable denture.
Implant site preparation
Correcting small deficiencies at the time of implant placement.

What Happens

01
A 3D scan shows how much bone you have and where it is missing.
02
Local anesthetic, with nitrous, IV sedation or general anesthesia if you prefer.
03
The gum is opened just enough to reach the site and clean it.
04
Graft material is packed to contour, often under a barrier membrane.
05
Sutures are placed; a socket graft adds only 15–20 minutes to an extraction.

Who Needs Grafting

A tooth missing for a year or more
A tooth lost to gum disease or long-standing infection
Not enough height in the upper back jaw, under the sinus
Long-term denture wear, where the ridge has flattened
Preparing a site for an implant, zirconia or full-arch case

What Do They Cost?

The size of the defect, the graft material, your anesthesia and your plan all move the figure. Reported U.S. ranges run from roughly $250–$1,100 for a socket graft up to several thousand for a large autograft — market ranges, not a quote.

Grafting is often partly covered when tied to a covered extraction or implant. We verify benefits and offer financing through CareCredit, no-interest monthly plans, all major cards.

Recovery

Swelling and mild soreness for the first week, then the graft matures out of sight. Implants generally follow within 6 to 12 months.

Aftercare

Ice the area the first day and keep your head elevated
Soft foods for several days
No vigorous rinsing or spitting, which can wash out graft granules
No smoking or vaping — the single largest cause of graft failure
Take antibiotics or rinses exactly as prescribed

Call Us If

You notice pus, a persistent bad taste or foul odor
Graft granules keep coming out of the site
The gum opens or recedes over the graft
You develop a fever, or numbness that does not resolve

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a bone graft before an implant?
Not always. If you have adequate width and height, the implant goes straight in. A 3D scan is what settles it, not a visual exam.
How long before I can get the implant?
Commonly four to six months after grafting, sometimes three for small sites and up to a year for large reconstructions.
Is donor bone safe?
Allograft comes from licensed tissue banks and is screened, processed and sterilized to remove cells and disease risk. It has been used routinely in dentistry and orthopedics for decades.
Can extraction and grafting be done the same day?
Yes, and it is usually the better option if you plan on an implant. Socket preservation adds a short time to the extraction appointment and reduces the need for larger grafting later.
Will insurance cover it?
Dental plans often cover part of a graft attached to a covered extraction or implant. Coverage varies by plan, so the office will help you check before treatment.
What if I wait?
Bone loss continues. Waiting often turns a straightforward socket graft into a larger ridge augmentation or a sinus lift, which costs more and takes longer.
